■重巡インディアナポリス号の悲劇

On July 30, 1945, during World War II
the U.S. Navy’s heavy cruiser Indianapolis
sank after being attacked by a torpedo of
the Japanese submarine.
Heavy Cruiser Indianapolis had a mission
to transfer the top secret material to Tinian.
Initially, the captain was not informed of
what the top secret material was.
The content of the top secret substance was
the atomic bomb that descended to Hiroshima.
But only President Truman, British Prime
Minister Churchill and and Dr. Oppenheimer’s
companions.
Oppenheimer is the central figure who developed
the atomic bomb.
１９４５年７月３０日に、第二次大戦中の米海軍の
重巡洋艦インディアナポリス号は、日本海軍の潜水艦
の魚雷攻撃により、沈没しました。
重巡インディアナポリスには、極秘物資をテニアン島
に移送する任務がありました。
当初は、その極秘物資が何であるかを、艦長には
知らされていませんでした。
極秘物質の中身は、ヒロシマに降下する原爆だったの
ですが、このことを知っているのは、トルーマン大統領、
イギリス首相のチャーチルとオッペンハイマー博士の仲間
のみでした。
オッペンハイマーは、原爆を開発した中心人物です。

Indianapolis departed San Francisco Bay
on July 16, 1945.
Due to a top secret mission, Indianapolis
was not accompanied by an escort destroyer.
But this will lead to later tragedy.
Thus, Indianapolis were safely able to
deliver the atomic bomb to Tinian island.
However, there is a problem with the return
of Indianapolis after completing the mission.
Even though the top secret mission has already
been solved, Army HQ didn’t attach a destroyer
escort on their return.
It was no wonder that a tragedy occurred here.
インディアナポリスは、１９４５年７月１６日に
サンフランシスコ湾を出港しました。
極秘任務のため、インディアナポリスには、護衛
の駆逐艦が伴っていませんでしたが、これが後の
悲劇につながることになります。
かくして、インディアナポリスは、無事にテニアン
島へ原爆を届けることができました。
しかし、任務を終えたインディアナポリスの帰還時
に問題があります。
すでに極秘任務は解かれているにもかかわらず、
軍司令部は、インディアナポリスに駆逐艦の護衛を
帰還においても付けませんでした
ここにおいて、悲劇が生じても不思議はありません
でした。

Finally, on July 30th, Indianapolis was
discovered by a submarine of the Japanese Navy.
Oxygen torpedo fired from a submarine hit
Indianapolis.
More than 10 minutes after being hit by a
torpedo, Indianapolis has sunk.
900 out of about 1200 crew members on board
were thrown into the sea.
Searching for the crew of the U.S. military
patrol aircraft, a crew member drifting was
found four days later.
During this time, the crew suffered from lack
of water and food.
Also, many crew members have become prey to
sharks.
The captain of Indianapolis thought, if the
atomic bomb was not transfered to Tinian,
the tragedy of Hiroshima wouldn’t have happened.
The captain committed suicide with a pistol 12
years later.
７月３０日に、ついに、インディアナポリスは、
日本海軍の潜水艦に発見されることになりました。
潜水艦から発射した酸素魚雷がインディアナポリス
に命中しました。
魚雷攻撃を受けてから１０分以上経った後に
インディアナポリスは沈没しました。
船内の乗組員約１２００名の中の９００人は海に投げ
出されました。
アメリカ軍の哨戒機が漂流している乗組員を発見したのは、
４日も経ってからでした。
この間に、乗組員たちは水や食糧の欠乏に悩まされて、
また、多くの乗組員がサメの餌食になりました。
インディアナポリスの館長は、もしも、原爆をテニアン島
に届けていなければ、広島の悲劇は起こらなかったと思い、
１２年後にピストル自殺をしたのです。
