■スマトラ沖の地震と津波

Just before 8:00 am on December 26, 2004, a massive
earthquake of magnitude 9.0 occurred off the coast
of Sumatra, Indonesia.
The tsunami generated by this earthquake reached not
only Indonesia but also Thailand, Malaysia and India.
The earthquake and tsunami left more than 300,000
people dead and missing.
The tsunami caused many casualties among tourists
from Japan, Europe, and the United States.
Since this earthquake, there have been many large
earthquakes around Sumatra.
2004年12月26日午前8時前に、インドネシアの
スマトラ島沖で、マグニチュード9.0の巨大地震
が発生しました。
この地震により発生した大津波がインドネシア
のみならず，タイ、マレーシア、インドまで到達
しました。
この地震と津波により、死者と行方不明者を
合わせて３０万人以上の被害が出ています。
この大津波により、日本や欧米からの観光客にも
多数の犠牲者が出ています。
この地震以降にも、スマトラ島周辺では大きな
地震が多発しています。
