Pluto was considered the ninth planet in the
solar system until 2006.
However, it is currently classified as a dwarf
planet.
If Pluto is included in the planet classification,
the number of similar planets will increase
by nearly 50 more.
With a diameter of 2370 km, Pluto is smaller than
the moon that orbits the Earth.
By the way, the diameter of the moon is 3474 km.
Pluto’s orbital period is 248 years, which is
one year shorter than Earth’s.
However, Pluto’s rotation period is 6 days,
and it rotates more slowly than Earth.
Pluto’s largest moon, Charon, is more than half
the size of Pluto.
The composition of Pluto’s atmosphere is about
90% nitrogen, about 10% methane, and a small
amount of carbon monoxide.
冥王星は、２００６年までは太陽系第９惑星
とされていました。
しかし、現在は準惑星に区分される天体です。
もしも、冥王星を惑星の区分に入れると、
同じような惑星がさらに５０個近くも増えること
になります。
冥王星の大きさは、直径は２３７０kmであり、
これは地球を周回する月よりも小さな天体です。
ちなみに、月の直径は３４７４kmです。
冥王星の公転周期は ２４８年であるため、地球
よりも１年が短くなります。
しかし、冥王星の自転周期は６日もあり、地球
よりもゆっくり自転しています。
冥王星の周りを回っている最大の衛星カロンは、
驚くことに、大きさが冥王星の半分以上もあります。
冥王星の大気の組成は、窒素が約９０%、メタンが
約１０%と微量の一酸化炭素です。
