■カバとワニに共存

We often see images of hippos and crocodiles coexisting
in the swamps of Africa, but in reality this is not
coexistence.
Hippos and crocodiles do not come into contact with
each other, even in the same swamp.
Hippos are herbivores, while crocodiles are carnivores.
Originally, crocodiles, which are carnivorous animals,
prey on hippos, but the crocodile’s jaw cannot open enough
to bite off the hippopotamus.
Conversely, hippos sometimes bite crocodiles.
A hippopotamus has a stronger bite than a crocodile.
Hippos don’t eat crocodiles, so they usually seem to
coexist without doing anything to each other.
However, crocodiles can also attack young hippos when
they are hungry.
If this happens, the crocodile will get a strong
counterattack from the hippopotamus.
So a hippopotamus and a crocodile do not benefit from
contact with each other.
アフリカの沼地でカバとワニが共存しているような
映像をよく見かけますが、実際には、これは共存
ではありません。
カバとワニは、同じ沼地にいても、お互いに接触する
ようなことはありません。
カバは草食動物ですが、ワニは肉食動物です。
本来なら肉食動物のワニがカバを捕食するのですが、
ワニのアゴは、カバを噛み切るほど開くことが
できません。
反対に、カバがワニを噛むことはあります。
カバの方がワニよりも噛む力は強力です。
カバはワニを食べるわけではないから、通常はお互い
が何もせずに共存しているよに見えるのです。
しかし、ワニも空腹状態のときには、カバの子供を
襲う場合もあります。
もしも、このような事態になると、ワニはカバから
強烈な反撃をくらうことになります。
だから、カバとワニはお互いに接触しても、何の
メリットもありません。
