The asteroid belt is a rocky region between
Mars and Jupiter.
The asteroid belt is not densely packed with
rocks scattered around, and most of the actual
asteroid belt is empty.
Hundreds of thousands of asteroids have been
discovered in the asteroid belt.
In fact, it is said that there are several
million in total.
More than 200 of the asteroids in the asteroid
belt exceed 100 km in diameter.
The largest one is called Ceres, and its diameter
is 1,000 km.
Collisions between asteroids occur frequently.
Collisions between these asteroids can scatter
rocks, and there is also the danger of crashing
into Earth’s orbit.
小惑星帯は、火星と木星の間に存在している岩石の
天体です。
小惑星帯には、岩石がびっしりと密集しながら散乱
しているわけではなく、実際の小惑星帯のほとんどは
空っぽの状態です。
小惑星帯には何十万もの小惑星がこれまでに発見され
ています。
実際には、全部で数百万個にも達すると言われています。
小惑星帯にある小惑星の中の２００個以上は、直径が
１００kmを超えます。
最大のものはケレスと呼ばれており、その直径は
１０００ kmにもなるほどの巨大なものです。
小惑星同士の衝突は頻繁に起こっています。
この小惑星同士の衝突により、岩石が散乱して、
地球軌道に突入する危険もあります。
