The Isewan Typhoon made landfall on Shionomisaki on
September 26, 1959, and caused severe damage from
the Tokai region to the Kii Peninsula.
Typhoon No. 15 was given the name Isewan Typhoon
because the damage was particularly heavy in Aichi
and Mie prefectures along the coast of Isewan.
It was the worst typhoon disaster in Japan’s history.
The biggest feature of the disaster caused by this
typhoon is the scale of human damage.
More than 5,000 people are dead and missing.
伊勢湾台風は、１９５９年９月２６日に潮の岬に
上陸して、東海地方から紀伊半島を中心にして
強烈な被害をもたらした台風です。
伊勢湾沿岸の愛知県と三重県での被害が特に大き
かったことから、この台風１５号は、伊勢湾台風
の名称が付けられました。
これまでの日本における台風の災害においては、
史上最悪の惨事となりました。
この台風による災害の最大の特徴は、人的被害の
大きさにあります。
死者と行方不明者の数は実に５０００人以上に
なっています。
